(William Collins, 1789 - 1853) In 1819 William Collins set up his first printing press in the ancient Candleriggs of Glasgow. He was a key figure in the city's transition from a relatively small manufacturing and university town into a great commercial metropolis. William Collins, who counted the Duke of Wellington among his associates, died in 1853 having secured the foundations of a business which followed the traditional Scottish pattern of combining printing and publishing as one concern.
The earliest known Collins diary was printed in 1799 for T. Willis of London. The first Collins diaries for the mass market were published in 1881 with five titles in the range. Operating from 144 Cathedral Street in Glasgow, Wm. Collins & Sons went on to become one of the world's leading publishers. The product offering was expanded to include Bibles, dictionaries, educational publications, fictional and non-fictional books as well as a wide range of office products.
The origins of Collins Debden Australia date back to the late 1800's when the Glasgow publishing, bookselling, printing and stationery firm of William Collins set up in Sydney. In 1946 William Collins sold its Australian manufacturing division and established Collins Bros., which continued to successfully market stationery products including the popular Collins Diaries and Account Book ranges.
In May 1986 Collins Bros. merged with Olympic Stationery and then with Croxley Stationery in 1992, bringing together three of the best-known and most respected names in the Australian stationery industry, Croxley Collins Olympic.
In 1979 Debden Associates was established in Australia, importing diaries from a Singapore offset printer that was later set up as the company production facility Nippecraft. Debden Associates developed and broadened its product range to cater to both the retail and corporate market places.
In September 1998 the Collins business merged with Debden Associates to become Collins Debden, the leading force in diaries and organisers in Australia.
Today, the Collins and Debden brands enjoy worldwide distribution, cementing their future strength as a global brand. In Australia, the Collins and Debden brands proudly remain Number 1 and 2 in the market, as identified by independent research (Penfold report, 2012). This prestigious position has been held due to our unrivalled brand quality, reputation, style and innovation.
